Permits in Martin County

Mostly county, a little city.

Most of Martin County is unincorporated, so Jensen Beach, Palm City, Port Salerno and Hobe Sound all permit with the Martin County Building Department. Only homes inside Stuart's city limits, about seven square miles, go to the City of Stuart; Jupiter Island and Ocean Breeze run their own.

The county also caps most buildings at four stories, which is why the condos along the river and on Hutchinson Island are low-rise. Condo boards here are detailed about contractors, so approvals come first.

    Inside city limits, permits go through the City of Stuart Building Division and its OpenGov portal. Plenty of homes with a Stuart mailing address sit in unincorporated Martin County, and those go to the Martin County Building Department instead.

    Hobe Sound is unincorporated, so Martin County issues permits. Jupiter Island homes use Hobe Sound addresses, but the Town of Jupiter Island runs its own permitting.

The City of Stuart only if the home is inside city limits. Many Stuart addresses are unincorporated Martin County, which means the Martin County Building Department.

What remodeling work needs a permit in Martin County?
