Fort Pierce, St. Lucie County

Mortar beds and settled slabs.

Mid-century Fort Pierce bathrooms often have tile set in a thick mortar bed, and some slabs have settled over the years. Both change how the new floor is built, so we look before we quote.

Taking a floor down to a flat, sound base is slower than tiling over the problem. It's also the only way the new tile stays put.

Fort Pierce incorporated in 1901 and was the biggest city on Florida's Atlantic coast between Daytona Beach and West Palm Beach until 1970. That means real age near downtown: frame houses from the early 1900s, then mid-century block homes around the core. South Beach, on the island, mixes condos like Harbour Isle with waterfront homes.

What we build in Fort Pierce

The cuts are planned before the first one.

Where the pattern starts decides where the cuts land. We dry-lay and mark the layout so slivers end up in corners, not across the middle of the wall, and veining on large tiles flows from one piece to the next.
  • Jetted tub set into blue onyx-look wall tile with copper veining and a wood-look accent wall

The cuts are planned before the first one.

    • Dry layout before setting
    • Centered patterns, cuts in the corners
    • Veining matched across large tiles
  • Walk-in shower with a green herringbone tile wall, brass-framed glass and a brass linear drain

    Patterns & accents

Herringbone, hex, and the bold ones.

    • Herringbone and chevron
    • Hexagon and mosaic
    • Geometric and 3D accent walls
  • Large living room with a polished Calacatta-look porcelain floor

    Florida conditions

Built for the humidity it lives in.

    • Flat substrate before large tiles

Permits

City of Fort Pierce Building Department

Inside city limits, the City of Fort Pierce Building Department issues permits. Lakewood Park, White City and Indian River Estates carry Fort Pierce addresses but are unincorporated, so those go to St. Lucie County Building and Code Regulation.

Permit office
  • Fort Pierce has a Historic Preservation Board, and properties in districts like Edgartown need a Certificate of Appropriateness for exterior changes such as windows and fences.

  • Early 1900s and mid-century houses can still have cast-iron drains or galvanized supply lines behind the walls. Opening a bathroom is the time to find out.

  • A Fort Pierce mailing address does not mean city jurisdiction. Check the parcel before applying, because the county covers the unincorporated areas around the city.

  • South Beach condos run on association rules for approvals, contractor insurance and working hours.

Working with Top Design Tile for our new‑construction home was one of the best decisions we made. They handled all of our flooring and bathroom tile work, and the results are truly beyond anything we imagined. Our design vision was brought to life so beautifully, especially the herringbone wood‑look tile with a brass border in the main living area. It’s the first thing people notice when they walk in, and it completely transformed the feel of the home and really elevates the space. The craftsmanship throughout the bathrooms is just as impressive. The mitered joints are flawless, the floating shower bench looks incredible, and the infinity niche in the spare bathroom was a design idea we’re so grateful they suggested. Every detail was done with precision, and you can tell Pedro and his team really take pride in their work. Communication throughout the entire process was amazing. We always felt heard, our input was respected, and we appreciated receiving picture updates along the way. He made a very stressful part of the build stress-free for us, and we really appreciate that. We are ecstatic with how everything turned out and would recommend Top Design Tile to anyone looking for high‑quality, thoughtful, and detail‑driven tile work!

Something else? Call (772) 282-4450

My address says Fort Pierce. Does the city issue my permit?

Only if the home is inside city limits. Areas like Lakewood Park, White City and Indian River Estates are unincorporated St. Lucie County and permit through the county's Building and Code Regulation division.

I live in a historic district. Can I still gut my bathroom?

Interior work is generally a building permit matter. The Historic Preservation Board's Certificate of Appropriateness covers exterior changes, so a new window or exterior door on a historic house needs that review first.

What should I expect inside an older Fort Pierce bathroom?

Homes from before the 1970s often have cast-iron drains, galvanized supply pipes or tile set in a thick mortar bed. None of that is a reason to skip a remodel, but it belongs in the plan and the budget from the start.

Light, built in

The glow is part of the tile plan.

Lit niches, floating vanities with light underneath, mirrors that glow from behind. It shows up in our favorite rooms because it gets drawn into the tile layout, not added after the wall is done.
